The El Cerrito High School (ECHS) Speech & Debate Team (also known as EC Forensics) empowers students to find their voice, think critically and speak out, in a supportive and inclusive community where all are welcome. Students at all levels are invited to join the team and compete in speech and debate tournaments. 

We are governed by a board of parents / guardians. Our team is fiscally sponsored under the non-profit umbrella of the ECHS Student Activity Fund (“SAF”).

History

Founded in 1965, the program enjoys a long history of success including championships at both the state and national levels. Our team is vibrant, diverse, close-knit, and we nurture and build student voice and expression.

Coaches

The team also has coaches who support the team by providing feedback, constructive criticism, and hands-on training. Coaches help students refine their performance, whether in speech or debate.

Parent Board

The Parent Board governs the team and consists of key positions —President, Treasurer, Secretary, Speech Coordinator and Debate Coordinator— working behind the scenes to organize events, fundraisers, and provide operational and logistical support. Parent and guardian participation helps create a strong sense of community among the team, making sure both students and families have everything they need to succeed.

Student Leaders

The leadership within the team extends to our talented student officers who guide their peers and keep the team running smoothly. 

Both speech and debate have a president, coordinator and captain. Any returning member of the team can apply for a student leadership position.  

The team also has a media coordinator role that manages the team’s social media presence, publicity, and communications.
